History

In Catalonia, Spain, by the Mediterranean sea, on the left of the Delta of the river Tordera, the town of Blanes exists since the XVI Century. There's a big rock, Sa Palomera, which appears from the water, and that indicates the exact point where the well-known Costa Brava (so called because of its typical small rocky beaches) starts. To the left, up to a conical hill, which as a sort of watchtower overlooks the Castle, San Juan, and where the hill ends in a cliff, which dies into the sea as a peninsula, El Convent stands, as a small wonder, distinct, exclusive, with an unmistakable silhouette of the Monastery whose outline shapes the skyline of Blanes wonderfully.

Since the war of Joan II, the vast lands of Catalonia seemed lost for the family Cabrera. In 1477, the Cabrera's heritage was inherited by an 18 years old girl, Anna. She had many suitors, and eventually she got married to Castilian Admiral, Fadric Enríquez, first cousin of the King Ferdinand II "The Catholic".

In 1481, Catalonia got back its land, except Blanes that in 1488 was retrieved. Probably, the viscountess, Anna, built a chapel consecrated to Saint Anna thanksgiving its territorial devolution.

In 1582, that small chapel became the location of the first Monastery, called "Capuchin Monastery" ("convento de los capuchinos"), and that afterwards, hosted the members of that religious order, together with Father Fray Arcángel de Alarcón, who was the nephew of Queen's Juana butler.

In 1626, as the Monastery was getting too small to host so many Capuchins, the Church and the Monastery were modified and rebuilt. Those works ended in the following years.

In 1835, Ferdinand VII died, and the Civil War started.

In 1845, under the Mendizábal Law, the building that had been the Capuchin Monastery was sold at auction, jointly with its Church, the young boys rooms, and the orchard and vegetable garden that in the whole formed a property of 31.500 square feet.
